Albert, Texas dates from 1877 when Fritz Wilke, George Maenius, and John Petri moved from Fredericksburg seeking new grazing lands for their cattle. Wilke, a blacksmith, bought his land from a man named Elmeier, who was later gunned down in a robbery shootout. The town was originally called Martinsburg after an early settler, and was a stop on the Fredericksburg-Blanco stage route. The Martinsburg post office operated from 1877 to 1886, when mail was routed through nearby Hye in Blanco County.
Meanwhile, twenty miles to the west, the Reverend August Engel was establishing his own post office. His sister, Minnie Engel, (or Sophie, depending on the source) was appointed Post Mistress and in a romantic gesture, filed the name of her fiancé as the requested township name. That name belonged to none other than the infamous Albert Luckenbach.
In 1892, Albert and Minnie Luckenbach moved their post office twenty miles east to Martinsburg and the little town was promptly renamed Albert, Texas.
The first local school was established in 1891, and in 1897 Postmaster Otto Schumann opened the town’s first general store. By 1900 a new school building was erected and the young Lyndon Baines Johnson walked through its doors in 1920. The Albert Dance Hall was built in 1922 by Max Beckman and featured German brass bands rotating between the Luckenbach, Hye and Weinheimer Dance Halls.
By the early 1950’s the little town of Albert was purchased by Alvin and Marvelene Maenius Jr. who operated the general store. The dancehall continued to provide the community a place for Saturday night dances and frequent social gatherings.
By 1985 the store had been torn down and the doors to the dancehall were closed for good...
In March of 2003, Robert L. Cave, a business owner/singer-songwriter from Austin, purchased the little town of Albert with the dream of one day resurrecting the old general store and still standing dancehall. Being a frequent visitor to Luckenbach, Cave envisioned a friendly hill country destination that would draw in both local talent and welcome visitors from all over.
